Lessons and insights gained from six years of list building

Besides from launching and creating online programs, list building has got to be one of my favourite topics to write about. After all, list building has always been a core focus of my business. And I believe it should be that way for all launch-based businesses!


But over the years, list building has changed… and the way that we approach it needs to change with it. So here are my lessons and insights gained from six years of list building!

Quality over quantity

There are so many ways that you can start list building in your business. And I’m sure that I’ve almost tried them all!

But the thing is: there are lots of other people trying them too! I only have to scroll my social media feeds for a couple of minutes to see all the free webinars, video series and workbooks that are being shared and promoted to me.

So with the huge amount of list building strategies that are out there in the online world, how do you make your free opt-ins stand out? Well I believe it’s all about quality!

I’ve had a huge amount of free opt-ins over the past six years but when I look at the numbers, I can see that only a few of them have contributed to the majority of my growth.

For example, my three-part video series is one of the best list building strategies I’ve ever implemented in my business. And I believe that its success all comes down to the quality of the series.

This includes:

  • Beautiful, custom-designed sales page
  • Professionally filmed videos
  • Informative and educational PowerPoint slides and handouts
  • Custom designed site to host the video series

Not to mention, the topic of the video series worked to solve a very specific problem that I knew my ideal clients were struggling with and the video series is full of valuable content that helps them to work through it.

So while it might be tempting to go crazy with content upgrades and lots of free bits and pieces to build your list, don’t underestimate the importance of one quality list building strategy that is executed to perfection!

Keep on top of the trends

If you’re going to invest in creating a high quality opt-in then you’ll want to make sure that you’re keeping on top of the trends. List-building strategies do go in and out of style and it’s always a good idea to keep track of what’s working for others.

This is exactly why I decided to create the Launch Like A Pro challenge… because I kept hearing about the success that other people were having with five-day challenges!

By keeping on top of the trends, I was able to make an informed decision that influenced my list building strategy and ultimately allowed it to be successful. Learn more about five day challenges here and here!

As well as keeping on top of the trends, you’ll also want to look at your own analytics and keep track of which strategies are working well and which strategies are least effective.

For example, perhaps you’re struggling to get sign-ups for your webinar but your video series is consistently growing. If this is the case then you might want to invest more time, effort and energy into promoting your video series and pull back from creating webinars.

After all, you want to create opt-ins that truly serve your ideal clients!

Don’t do it all alone

When it comes to list building, you might be feeling like you’re constantly promoting to the same people all of the time. You send an email, write a social media post or create an ad… and while you might see some quick growth at the start, it eventually hits a plateau.

At this stage, it might be tempting to go back to the drawing board and start a new list building strategy with a new free opt-in. After all, you’ve done everything you can do to promote your current opt-in, right? Well actually, no!

I want to remind you that there are more than 4 billion internet users in the world… which means you have the ability to reach more than 4 billion people online!

But how do you go beyond your current communities and continue to reach more and more people? I believe it’s all about partnerships.

I have always partnered with affiliates when it comes to launching my online courses and over the years, I’ve been lucky to partner with the incredible Denise Duffield-Thomas. There was one launch in particular, where Denise shared a free webinar that I was running, and more than 2,000 people signed up to join me!

This was the most people that I’d ever had signed up to a webinar and it was all thanks to beautiful connection and partnerships.

While bringing on affiliates is a more official way of partnering with someone, there are other ways to do it. For example: you could email some of your closest friends and ask them to share your new opt-in with their community. Or you could encourage those people who have already accessed your free opt-in to go on and share with their community.

Another great way to build relationships is to write a guest post for someone! This is a tip that I got from the incredible Nathalie Lussier as part of her FREE 30 Day List Building Challenge which you can sign up for here!

The point is: you don’t have to do all of your list building alone. In an online world where everyone is trying their best to be seen and recognised, your community and connections really do matter!

Make it simple and easy

As with all things, signing up for your list should be simple and easy for your community. There is so much content to consume online and if your offerings aren’t easy enough to access then you’re likely going to miss out on a new subscriber and potential client.

So how do you make it simple and easy to sign up for your opt-in?

Here are some ideas:

  • Add your free opt-in to the front page of your website
  • Promote your free opt-ins on Facebook (and link straight to where they can sign up)
  • Promote your free opt-ins with your Facebook cover image
  • Use the button under your Facebook cover image to link to your free opt-ins
  • Promote your free opt-ins in your email signature

Implement these ideas and not only will signing up for your opt-ins be simple and easy – but it will make your list building strategy simple and easy too!

Get the right support

And like I said before, you don’t have to do it all alone so make sure that you get the right support to help you with your list building.
